The Harz is Germany’s northernmost low mountain range and is located in the border region of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia.

The range is approximately 110 km long and 30 to 40 km wide, covering an area of 2,226 km². At 1,142 meters, the Brocken is the highest peak in the Harz. In the western Harz, the peaks reach a height of 800 meters, while the eastern Harz rises to 550 meters.

The Harz Mountains were formed between 250 and 350 million years ago, during the Carboniferous Period. In later geological eras, the area was uplifted and tilted by as much as 80 degrees. The way the rock formations rise sharply from the landscape is clearly visible.

A highlight is the German “Grand Canyon”: a steep gorge near Treseburg.
