Culture

In addition to its natural beauty, the Harz region offers numerous other attractions. Culturally speaking, the possibilities are endless, with historic castles, towns full of half-timbered houses, and centuries-old cathedrals in Quedlinburg and Halberstadt.

Scattered throughout the region, you’ll find secluded spots for day trips—places rarely visited by tourists. We’d be happy to give you a few tips.

Take, for example, the cave dwellings in Langenstein. A winding road leads to the site where a castle once stood; on either side, dwellings have been carved directly into the rock faces. Some of these dwellings were inhabited until the early 20th century.

Traces of the region’s mining past can be found everywhere. In Elbingerode, you can explore a mine shaft and see how ore was once extracted from the mountain.

For lovers of theater and musicals, there’s the Harzer Bergtheater. The breathtaking view of the Harz foothills provides a magical backdrop for the performances.

Concerts are also held in various churches; check the programs or feel free to ask us for information.

Between Treseburg and Stolberg lies the Auerberg mountain, topped by the Josephskreuz (St. Joseph’s Cross). This cross dates from the same period as the Eiffel Tower. Its design as a double cross is particularly unique.
